To City Council Members, Another student appears to have had an accident riding their bike to school this morning on the corner of San Mateo and Santa Cruz. I saw an ambulance on scene and I’m praying he’s ok. I’m sure we will hear more details on what happened, but I'm not happy there has been zero traffic enforcement around our schools since that ONE day at Hillview last month. Traffic enforcement is one piece of the puzzle to reducing these types of incidents. Nobody is saying it is the solution, but don’t tell me it's not an essential piece of that puzzle and worth assigning officers to schools during arrival and dismissal to deter dangerous and sometimes illegal choices. I don’t know who will be at fault in this case, so please don’t say I’m pitting one against the other. I’m asking for police presence to deter bad decisions and breaking of the law for all. We need to encourage everyone on all modes of transport to slow down, look both ways, not be distracted and get to their destination safely. I would like to know who is responsible for refusing to allocate the funds needed to protect our community during school arrival/dismissal. Simple, straightforward traffic enforcement is needed immediately. I am very curious which city council members are blocking our police efforts to protect us. Your lack of action to allow funding for traffic enforcement shows your community that you don't view the safety of our children as a top priority. That is truly sad. Long term plans for sophisticated bike lanes are great, but they are only one piece of this puzzle. Funding police NOW to manage the traffic enforcement piece is essential TODAY! Respectfully but extremely frustrated, Katie Gardner
